El nombre aparece por primera vez en 1172 como Heinrici Capella y en 1477 como Heynrichs Cappellen. El lugar pertenece a la llamada región Platdietse y formaba parte del área original del ducado de Limburgo.
En Hendrikkapelle nace el Gulp.
En el museo del Camino, un museo al aire libre con una colección de seis tramos de carretera, se pueden encontrar caminos de diferentes períodos, desde una vía romana hasta un camino de la época en que reinaba Alberto I.
En el cementerio militar estadounidense Henri-Chapelle, de 23 hectáreas, están enterrados casi ocho mil soldados, la mayoría de los cuales cayeron en la Batalla de las Ardenas.
