De Moervaart, een zuidelijke aftakking van de Durme, werd in 1531 rechtgetrokken en van verschillende bruggen voorzien. Moervaart, Zuidlede (reeds in 1379 rechtgetrokken) en andere waterlopen in de Moervaartdepressie waren van belang onder meer voor het vervoer van turf en brandhout naar Gent. De exploitatie van de veen- en turfgronden was één van de voornaamste economische activiteiten te Moerbeke in de middeleeuwen.
