Achel is bekend vanwege de Achelse Kluis, een trappistenklooster dat deels op Nederlands grondgebied ligt. Dit klooster brouwt zijn eigen bier, het trappistenbier genaamd Achel.De eerste schriftelijke vermelding van Achel is uit 1139, toen de naam als Achile werd geschreven. Aghel en Aeghelen zijn recentere benamingen. De naam is samengesteld uit de woorden aha en lo. Aha betekent water, verwijzend naar de Warmbeek. Een lo is een bos op zanderige grond en meestal vlak bij een nederzetting lag. Achel betekent dus "Het op zandgrond gelegen bosje bij het water".
