In the heart of the Borinage, you will find one of the most beautiful examples of industrial archaeology in Belgium: Le Grand-Hornu. This site was established between 1816 and 1835 by the French industrialist Henri de Gorge. He had purchased a concession in 1810 to extract coal in Hornu.
The neoclassical complex consists of around 400 houses, workshops, and administrative buildings. Especially the workshops located around a large central courtyard form an impressive whole.
Since 2002, part of the buildings has housed the MAC's: the Museum of Contemporary Arts.
