The pumping station Gelsenkirchen-Horst is a water construction facility of the Emscher Association that was put into operation in 1958 on the grounds of the Nordsternpark.
The pumping station was needed due to subsidence caused by mining above the Nordstern coal field. Its catchment area in Horst covers 316 hectares. In the past, it pumped the collected water into the higher and embanked Emscher; today, it diverts the majority of the water via the underground Emscher Canal to the Bottrop wastewater treatment plant. This canal is part of the project to restructure the Emscher system to relieve the Emscher of wastewater.
