Fra december 1878 til oktober 1880 boede Vincent Van Gogh i Borinage, hvor han endda i april 1879 gik syv hundrede meter ned i kulminen i Marcasse. Van Gogh levede i bitter fattigdom i Petit-Wasmes rundt om hjørnet fra Charbonnage de Marcasse.
Marcasse minder ikke kun om Van Gogh. Et monument i en niche i minen mindes de 17 minearbejdere, der mistede livet her ved en gaseksplosion den 13. januar 1953. I 1958 faldt gardinet for Marcasse. De 2 skaktstænger blev revet ned, men resten af fabriksbygningerne (som i øvrigt ikke stammer fra Van Gogh-æraen, men fra 1920) forblev stående.
Stedet er privat ejendom, men man kan regelmæssigt deltage i guidede ture eller begivenheder omkring Van Gogh i Borinage, se vangoghborinage.canalblog.com.
