Spaans fort uit de 16e eeuw van waaruit toen het belegerde Oostende kon bestookt worden. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog wordt dit goed bewaarde fort ingenomen door Duitse troepen, versterkt met een bunker en gebruikt als observatiepost in ondergelopen gebied.
'Das Alte Fort', zoals de Duitsers het noemen, ligt bijzonder strategisch, langs het kanaal en met zicht op het sluizencomplex van Nieuwpoort. Het wordt daarom geregeld gebombardeerd.
Het fort is tegenwoordig nog zichtbaar als een verhoging in het vlakke polderlandschap. Het is sinds 1981 beschermd als monument.
