El jaciment de Bernissart és conegut principalment per haver proporcionat 28 esquelets fòssils complets d'Iguanodon, un dels dinosaures més ben coneguts gràcies a aquest jaciment. També s'han recuperat restes d'un dinosaure carnívor, dues espècies de cocodril, dues tortugues, quinze de peixos , artròpodes i restes vegetals. El jaciment es va formar en el Cretaci inferior, fa entre 130 i 112 milions d'anys enrere .
