Den hollandske Ferdinand Lousberg begyndte at investere i den tekstilindustri i Gent og blev en meget rig mand i 2. halvdel af det 18. århundrede. Han var en af de første, der installerede dampmaskiner i sine fabrikker. Han gav ordre til at skabe denne bygning til sine arbejdere. Han mente, at hans arbejdere skulle kunne 'ånde', derfor de høje rum og det mange lys, som er typiske træk ved murstensarkitektur.
Efter 2. verdenskrig er det blevet et plejehjem.
I 1999 blev bygningen købt for at blive omdannet til kontor- og boligpladser med smukke lofter.
