Die berühmte Textilstadt hat ihren Ursprung in der Geologie der Region. Im Tal der Vesdre entwickelte sich schnell eine gewisse industrielle Aktivität. Neben der Metallbearbeitung wurde insbesondere die Tuchindustrie wichtig. Diese profitierte von dem kalkarmen Wasser, das von der Hohen Venn stammte und sich sehr gut zum Waschen der Wolle eignete. In einem Dokument aus dem Jahr 1413 wurde von vier Walkmühlen berichtet. Im 17. Jahrhundert verdrängte die Tuchindustrie fast vollständig die Metallbearbeitung.
