Der ehemalige Grotenhoutwald ist ein Relikt des herrschaftlichen Waldes mit einem imposanten Forstkomplex, der als Jagdgebiet für die Herzöge von Brabant und später für die Herren von Turnhout diente. Dieses Waldgebiet - ein großes, zusammenhängendes, waldreiches Areal in einem unberührten, offenen Landwirtschaftsgebiet - ist das einzige alte Waldkomplex dieser Größenordnung in den Kempen, das mindestens seit dem Mittelalter erhalten geblieben ist. Im Wald kommen empfindliche alte Vegetationen mit seltenen Pflanzen vor, die an ein Waldmilieu gebunden sind.
