Die historische Festung Hellevoetsluis wurde zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts angelegt. Hellevoetsluis war der erste Marinestützpunkt der Admiralität des Landes. Die Silberflotte von Piet Heyn wurde hier an Land gebracht und danach triumphierend entlang der Städte Hollands nach Amsterdam geführt.
Die Festung hat größtenteils ihren historischen Zustand bewahrt, beherbergt aber auch interessante und gut integrierte Neubauten. Historisch sind das Tromphuys und das (Michiel de) Ruyterhuys, der Cruyttoren und das Jan Blanken Dock (ein einzigartiges Trockendock).
