Durch die Eröffnung der Maasbrücke im Jahr 1929 wurde Grave zum östlichen Tor von Brabant, und die damals bestehende Provinzialstraße 324 war die Reichsstraße, die Nijmegen und 's-Hertogenbosch verband. Der Bau der Mariakapelle an dieser Straße wurde inspiriert durch eine am 30. April 1946 über das Radio ausgestrahlte Predigt von Kaplan Hermus aus der Sint-Janskathedraal in Den Bosch über die Marienstatue, die im Westen von Brabant an der Moerdijk wacht, und Unsere Süße Liebe Frau, die ihre Sorgen aus der Sint-Janskathedraal streut. Nach dem Hören der Predigt zogen Bruder Rudolph vom Blindeninstitut in Grave und Piet Pennings, Vorsitzender der Katholischen Arbeiterbewegung (KAB), unabhängig den Schluss, dass auch im Osten eine Marienstatue über den Zugang zur Provinz wachen sollte.
