La histórica Fortaleza de Hellevoetsluis se construyó a principios del siglo XVII. Hellevoetsluis fue la primera base naval de la Almirantazgo de los Países Bajos. La Flota de Plata de Piet Heyn fue desembarcada aquí y luego llevada en triunfo a través de las ciudades de Holanda hacia Ámsterdam.
La Fortaleza ha mantenido en gran parte su estado histórico, pero también alberga construcciones nuevas interesantes y bien integradas. Históricamente, son el Tromphuys y el (Michiel de) Ruyterhuys, la Torre de la Salud y el Dock Jan Blanken (un dique seco único).
