Hoesche Waard es, como su nombre indica, una "waard" (o "weerd"). Ese es un nombre antiguo para un paisaje plano en una zona de ríos. Las "waarden" se han formado bajo la influencia de los ríos y están completamente o parcialmente rodeadas por ellos. Las "waarden" están protegidas de estos cursos de agua por diques fluviales. Esto contrasta con las "uiterwaarden", que se encuentran en la parte exterior de los diques del río. Los nombres de regiones con "waard" han aparecido en el área de ríos holandesa desde el siglo XII. Grandes "waarden" son Alblasserwaard, Bommelerwaard, Krimpenerwaard, Lopikerwaard, Tielerwaard y Hoeksche Waard. La Groote o Hollandsche Waard es una "waard" que ya no existe.
