A través de la apertura del Puente Maas en 1929, Grave se convirtió en la puerta oriental de Brabante, y la actual carretera provincial 324 era en ese momento la carretera nacional que conectaba Nijmegen y 's-Hertogenbosch. La construcción de la capilla de María en esta carretera fue inspirada por un sermón transmitido por radio el 30 de abril de 1946 por el capellán Hermus de la Catedral de San Juan en Den Bosch sobre la imagen de María que vela en el oeste de Brabante, en Moerdijk, y Nuestra Dulce Señora que extiende sus preocupaciones desde la Catedral de San Juan. Tras escuchar el sermón, el hermano Rudolph del Instituto de Ciegos de Grave y Piet Pennings, presidente del Movimiento Católico de Trabajadores (KAB), llegaron de manera independiente a la conclusión de que también en el este debía haber una imagen de María que vigilara la entrada a la provincia.
