Forte spagnolo del XVI secolo da cui si poteva bombardare l'assediata Ostenda. Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, questo ben conservato forte viene occupato dalle truppe tedesche, rinforzato con un bunker e utilizzato come punto di osservazione in una zona allagata.
'Das Alte Fort', come lo chiamano i tedeschi, si trova in una posizione particolarmente strategica, lungo il canale e con vista sul complesso delle chiuse di Nieuwpoort. Viene pertanto bombardato regolarmente.
Oggi il forte è ancora visibile come un rialzo nel pianeggiante paesaggio polder. È protetto come monumento dal 1981.
