Nel dizionario del medio olandese si può leggere che il nome Verloren Kost indica un oggetto strategico: una fortificazione, di solito una torre; separata dalla linea principale che si trovava davanti a questa a una certa distanza. Il suo significato è una rinforzo avanzato. Un Verloren Kost è una difesa temporanea dalla quale ci si ritira nella fortificazione propriamente detta. È letteralmente un investimento perso che secondo alcune fonti consisteva in una torre e a volte si trovava sulle mura della città.
