Nel 1936 il Ministero dell'Aviazione del Reich tedesco (RLM) sostenne Felix Wankel nella realizzazione di un motore funzionante con pistoni rotanti. Il RLM era molto interessato a questo perché era fortemente impegnato nella costruzione di una forza aerea che sarebbe stata utilizzata successivamente nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Grazie a questo sostegno, Felix Wankel poté costruire un laboratorio più grande, il Wankel Versuchswerkstatt a Lindau, vicino al lago di Costanza. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Wankel poté continuare il suo lavoro di ricerca grazie al supporto del Reich. Nel 1945 il suo laboratorio fu smantellato dagli alleati. Solo nel 1951 il ricercatore riprese i suoi esperimenti, questa volta a casa sua a Lindau, dove fondò la Technische Entwicklungsstelle (TES).
