Il villaggio di Macugnaga sfuggì a una catastrofe nel 2007. Sul Monte Rosa avvenne allora una spettacolare valanga di rocce. Fu il risultato di un'insolita ondata di calore in tutta Europa. I 300.000 metri cubi di roccia atterrarono in un lago secco di stagione. Se il lago fosse stato pieno, avrebbe provocato un'enorme onda, con conseguenze catastrofiche per il villaggio di Macugnaga a valle. NewScientist lo definì uno dei primi segni del cambiamento climatico.
