La storica Fortezza di Hellevoetsluis è stata costruita all'inizio del XVII secolo. Hellevoetsluis è stata la prima base navale dell'Amministrazione navale olandese. La Flotta d'Argento di Piet Heyn è stata qui portata a terra e poi condotta trionfalmente lungo le città dell'Olanda fino ad Amsterdam.
La Fortezza ha in gran parte mantenuto il suo stato storico, ma ospita anche interessanti e ben integrati nuovi edifici. Storicamente, il Tromphuys e il (Michiel de) Ruyterhuys, la Cruyttoren e il Dock di Jan Blanken (un'unica darsena) sono significativi.
