De Koninklijke Serres van Laken zijn een prachtvoorbeeld van art nouveau. Ze werden gebouwd door Alphonse Balat in opdracht van Leopold II. Het begin- en eindpunt van de spanten steunen op de grond zodat de serre het beeld biedt van een glazen koepel die door luchtbogen wordt geschoord. Door de enorme afmetingen was het mogelijk hier Kongolese palmbomen te planten. De kassen waren bedoeld als symbool van 's konings koloniale macht in Belgisch-Kongo. Planten uit die streek zouden die macht illustreren.
