In 'De Zwinduinen en -polders' hebben heel wat mijnenvelden gelegen. In 1944 verspreidden de bezetters landmijnen over het volledige vliegveld waardoor het onbruikbaar werd. Het mijnenveld kreeg de codenaam '114 Odette 712'. Er lagen ongeveer 12. 000 mijnen. De meeste mijnenvelden werden nog tijdens WO II opgeruimd door de geallieerde troepen maar een aantal achtergebleven mijnen zorgde later wel voor dodelijke ongelukken.
