Het was op deze plek op de oude Nürburgring in de linkerbocht voor Bergwerk dat dat Niki Lauda materiaalpech kreeg en haaks rechts in de vangrails schoot. Hij dreigde levend te verbranden toen het wrak vlam vatte, maar hij werd gered door vier coureurs die vlak achter hem aan kwamen en de ernst van het ongeluk inzagen, zij stopten onmiddellijk en sprongen uit hun auto's. Dit gebeurde in 1976.
