Lige før Geuzen den 8. maj 1581 tog kontrol over Lede, havde de allerede taget slottet. Erobringen skete ifølge Boons Geuzenboek temmelig nemt, da de soldater, der forsvarede slottet, tilbød lidt eller ingen modstand mod de fremrykkende Geuzenkorps. På det tidspunkt havde et stort antal Gentiske militærstyrker tilsluttet sig disse Geuzenkorps.
