I 1238, efter at Balansiya var blevet erobret, var der kun to muslimske stater tilbage på halvøen: Emiratet af Gharnata og Emiratet af Mursiyya, som kontrollerede Alzira og Dàniyya med støtte fra Tunis. Hærene fra Aragonien fortsatte fremad mod syd og fastlagde positioner over for Kongeriget Castella, som også forsøgte at udvide sine besiddelser. En fæstning blev etableret i Sellent, og derfra gjorde de sig klar til at angibe Xàtiva.
