Die typischen Torfabbau in diesem Gebiet und im angrenzenden Gebiet der Grafen von Holland war der Cope-Abbau. Der ‚Cope‘ war der Vertrag, der die Rechte und Pflichten der Landwirte festlegte. Die Landbesitzer gaben Parzellen von Torfgebiet mit festen Maßen aus, die genau von Landvermessern vermessen wurden. Die am häufigsten vorkommende Größe war ein Grundstück von etwa 1.250 Metern Länge und 113 Metern Breite (ca. 14 Hektar). Nach der Regulierung der Entwässerung wurde die Vegetation auf dem Torf verbrannt, und nach einiger Zeit konnte das Land dann als Wiese oder Ackerfläche genutzt werden. Das Wort ‚Cope‘ ist in vielen Ortsnamen im Torf wiederzuerkennen. Denken Sie an Nieuwkoop, Papekop, Boskoop oder Boeicop.
