In 1939/1940 werd in Pamel met stalen versperringen op rollen (= Cointetelementen of antitankhindernissen) een IJzeren muur opgetrokken die vanaf de Dender over een afstand van iets meer dan één kilometer zigzagde in de richting van Meerbeke. De IJzeren muur was onderdeel van een aftakking van de K(oningshooikt-W(aver)-linie, aftakking die liep van Waver tot Pamel. De KW-linie moest obstakel zijn voor de Duitsers, de aftakking hindernis voor Frankrijk en zo uiting zijn van de neutraliteit van België. Eind 1941 lieten de Duitsers in Pamel de IJzeren muur demonteren.
