Bygget i det 15. århundrede og forstærket i det 18. århundrede, støtter Gros Mur det terræn, som kirken og plænen hviler på. Det har både en defensiv funktion (vold) og en byplanlægningsfunktion (støtte). Der er tilbage nogle sektioner af muren fra omkring 350 meter, der blev bygget i det 14. århundrede. Otte af de ni befæstede porte, der fungerede som vejrlig, er blevet ødelagt under religionskrigene. Kun porten til Lyon under Gros Mur er bevaret.
