One of the most notable events in Belgian pop music is the Festival Actuel in Amougies in October 1969. This five-day festival is often referred to as the "European Woodstock" and uniquely brought together jazz and rock for the first time. World stars like Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Yes, Ten Years After, and Captain Beefheart performed for around 100,000 festival-goers. The location was special: in a meadow near this Walloon village of Amougies, because the festival was banned in France. This suddenly made a small village the backdrop of pop history with a global appeal.
