All'età di 17 anni, Felix Wankel (1902-1988) pensava già che sarebbe stato molto più efficiente far funzionare un motore a quattro tempi attraverso le sue quattro fasi anziché andare su e giù. All'età di 22 anni ha aperto il suo laboratorio a Heidelberg dove poteva sviluppare la sua idea, anche se non era un costruttore di motori. In seguito avrebbe sviluppato il motore Wankel.
