Het monument herinnert eraan dat hier Koningin Wilhelmina op 13 maart 1945 weer voet op Nederlandse bodem zette. Na vijf jaar in ballingschap te zijn geweest tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Buurtbewoners hebben toen met meel een symbolische grens getrokken. De Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft diepe sporen nagelaten in West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen met veel slachtoffers en enorme materiële schade.
