In the Middle Dutch dictionary, you can read that the name Verloren Kost refers to a strategic object: a defensive structure, usually a tower; separated from the main line which was located at a certain distance in front of it. Its meaning is an advanced reinforcement. A Verloren Kost is a temporary defense from which one can retreat to the actual fortification. It is literally a lost investment that, according to some sources, consisted of a tower and sometimes this was located on the city walls.
