Leeds Castle, situé sur 500 acres de parc dans la campagne du Kent, tire son nom non de la ville de Leeds mais de son premier propriétaire, un homme nommé Leed, ou Ledian, qui s'est construit un château en bois en 857. Le premier château en pierre a été construit en 1119 sur une île dans le lac, et a été ensuite reconstruit et agrandi par Edward Ier, qui a ajouté un ensemble de murs extérieurs, un barbican et la 'gloriette', une tour en forme de D construite sur la plus petite des deux îles du lac.
