Volgens de traditie was het in Iria Flavia dat de apostel Sint Jakob voor het eerst preekte tijdens zijn verblijf in Hispania. Kort na zijn dood brachten zijn discipelen Theodorus en Athanasius zijn hoofd en lichaam in een stenen boot van Jeruzalem naar Iria. Ze maakten de boot vast aan een pedrón (Galicisch voor grote steen), vandaar de nieuwe toponiem die aan de plek werd gegeven. De twee discipelen bleven in Iria Flavia (nu Padrón) om te preken nadat ze de apostel in Compostela hadden begraven, en de legendarische pedrón is vandaag de dag te zien in de parochiekerk van Santiago de Padrón.
