Vandringen foregår på og omkring Kruisberg, en del af Kempen bakke. Denne langstrakte sandkæde strækker sig fra Retie til Grobbendonk og er dannet af gamle havaflejringer. Det ses f.eks. ved fossiler af skaller, der kan findes hist og her. Kæden danner en såkaldt cuesta med en stejl sydside ned mod den Lille Nete og en blød skråning mod dalen ved Aa. Den del, der ligger nord for jernbanelinjen til Turnhout, er turistmæssigt udbygget (vær opmærksom på mountainbikere!). På Bosbergen syd for jernbanelinjen prioriteres naturen, og der foretages hedepleje.
