For at undgå en gentagelse af katastrofeåret 1672 beordrer statholder Willem III i 1673, at Rijndijk ved Wiericke skal forstærkes med en skanse. Inden for seks måneder, i juli samme år, er "Det store fort ved den lille Wierick" klar.
Kortlægningen af fortet er oprindeligt lavet i henhold til det gamle hollandske system og lignede stærkt de omkringliggende 'befæstede byer', som også fandt beskyttelse bag porte, voldgrave og bastioner.
Fort Wierickerschans er hele tiden blevet tilpasset ændringer og indsigter i militæret, men den oprindelige form er blevet bevaret.
