La famosa città tessile ha le sue origini nella geologia della regione. Nella valle del Vesder si sviluppò rapidamente una certa attività industriale. Oltre alla lavorazione dei metalli, l'industria del panno divenne particolarmente importante. Questa beneficiava dell'acqua povera di calcare proveniente dagli Alti Veni, molto adatta per il lavaggio della lana. In un documento del 1413 si fa riferimento a quattro fulcri. Nel XVII secolo, l'industria del panno soppiantò quasi completamente quella della lavorazione dei metalli.
