Il Roma fu costruito nel 1928 come cinema e portava il nome del costruttore, il muratore italiano Jean-Baptiste Romeo e sua moglie Ludvina Malev.
Con le sue 2000 posti a sedere, è stata a lungo la più grande sala cinematografica di Anversa. Hanno anche si sono esibiti personaggi famosi: Gaston Berghmans, Leo Martin, Charles Janssens, Co Flower, Mireille Mathieu e Zarah Leander. Negli anni '70 divenne uno dei templi del rock e del pop in Belgio con concerti di Lou Reed, Cliff Richard, The Shadows, Marvin, Welch & Farrar, Olivia Newton-John, Iggy Pop, Paul McCartney, Nils Lofgren e Ry Cooder. Nel 1982 la sala fu chiusa, ma gli appassionati di cultura sognavano di ridare vita al Roma.
Nel 2003 le porte dell'ex Cinema Roma sono state riaperte. L'impegno inestimabile di molti volontari ha reso possibile la ristrutturazione della maestosa sala cinematografica - un'operazione che si è conclusa solo nel 2015. Oggi il Roma continua a proiettare film. Ma è soprattutto anche un'attrazione per concerti e attività socio-culturali.
