Badajoz is een grote grensstad met 150.000 inwoners. Badajoz geniet van zijn goede ligging aan de Guadiana rivier en profiteert in grote mate ook van de handel tussen Portugal en Spanje. De stad kent een continentaal mediterraan klimaat met Atlantische invloeden. De zomers zijn er warm met maximumtemperaturen in de buurt van de 45 graden Celsius.
De stad werd in de 9de eeuw opnieuw gesticht door de arabieren op de plaats van een oude nederzetting van de Visigothen. De stad bloeit in korte tijd fel op. In 1230 werd ze heroverd door koning Alfons IX van León. De stad blijft heel belangrijk en is regelmatig getuige van grensoorlogen tussen Spanje en Portugal.
