Rund um den gepflasterten Marktplatz und in der Tidexerstraße stehen bemerkenswerte gotische und Renaissance-Fachwerkhäuser. Zwei auffällige Gebäude auf dem Marktplatz sind dem bekannten Schlingel der Stadt, Tijl Uilenspiegel, gewidmet. Der Legende nach arbeitete er in einer Brauerei - daran besteht in der Tat eine gute Chance - und der Komponist Richard Strauss setzte seine Erlebnisse in der symphonischen Dichtung Till Eulenspiegel in Musik um.
