Artevelde war ein Geschäftsmann und Staatsmann aus Gent. Er handelte mit Vieh, Fisch, Wein, Silber und Textilien. Er wohnte am Kalandeberg und wurde in der Nähe seines Wohnsitzes in der Paddenhoek am 17. Juli 1345 ermordet. Einige Versionen berichten, dass dies geschah, als er aus seinem Haus flüchten wollte, andere Versionen behaupten, dass es geschah, als er nach Besprechungen in Damme nach Hause kam. Über die Tatsache, dass er von Gerard Denijs, dem Meister der Webergilde, ermordet worden sein soll, besteht jedoch Einigkeit.
