El canal que cruza Beernem es el de Ostende a Gante. La vía fluvial existe desde 1623. Dado que viajar en barco era mucho más cómodo que un viaje por carretera en ese entonces, se estableció una lujosa embarcación de aguas entre Gante y Brujas. Este servicio de lanzadera diario (de 46 km) se mantuvo hasta mediados del siglo XIX.
