L'estàtua en homenatge al fundador de la ciutat de Guimarães es troba a la plaça del mateix nom i va ser dissenyada per Álvaro Brée . Va ser donada per António de Oliveira Salazar i inaugurada el 1960 pel llavors president de la República, almirall Américo Tomaz.
Mumadona Dias va ser la fundadora de l'antiga ciutat de Guimarães , doncs a la segona meitat del segle X , després de la mort del seu marit el comte Hermenegildo i d'acord amb els desitjos d'aquest recollits en el seu testament, aquesta rica comtessa va manar construir un monestir en la llavors Quintana de Vimaranes, al voltant del qual es va desenvolupar la ciutat de Guimarães.
Per protegir el monestir i els seus habitants de les invasions normandes, posteriorment va fer construir un castell (el castell de Guimarès).
