The statue in honor of the founder of the city of Guimarães is located in the square of the same name and was designed by Álvaro Brée . It was donated by António de Oliveira Salazar and inaugurated in 1960 by the then President of the Republic, Admiral Américo Tomaz.
Mumadona Dias was the founder of the ancient city of Guimarães , because in the second half of the 10th century , after the death of her husband Count Hermenegildo and in accordance with his wishes recorded in his will, this wealthy countess had a monastery built in what was then Quintana de Vimaranes, around which the city of Guimarães developed.
To protect the monastery and its inhabitants from Norman invasions, she later had a castle built (Guimares Castle).
