La estatua en homenaje al fundador de la ciudad de Guimarães se encuentra en la plaza del mismo nombre y fue diseñada por Álvaro Brée . Fue donada por António de Oliveira Salazar e inaugurada en 1960 por el entonces presidente de la República, almirante Américo Tomaz.
Mumadona Dias fue la fundadora de la antigua ciudad de Guimarães , pues en la segunda mitad del siglo X , tras la muerte de su marido el conde Hermenegildo y de acuerdo con los deseos de éste recogidos en su testamento, esta rica condesa mandó construir un monasterio en la entonces Quintana de Vimaranes, alrededor del cual se desarrolló la ciudad de Guimarães.
Para proteger el monasterio y sus habitantes de las invasiones normandas, posteriormente mandó construir un castillo (el castillo de Guimarès).
