Die Statue zu Ehren des Gründers der Stadt Guimarães steht auf dem gleichnamigen Platz und wurde von Álvaro Brée entworfen . Es wurde von António de Oliveira Salazar gestiftet und 1960 vom damaligen Präsidenten der Republik, Admiral Américo Tomaz, eingeweiht .
Mumadona Dias war die Gründerin der antiken Stadt Guimarães , denn in der zweiten Hälfte des 10. Jahrhunderts , nach dem Tod ihres Mannes Graf Hermenegildo und gemäß seinen in seinem Testament festgehaltenen Wünschen, befahl diese reiche Gräfin, dort ein Kloster zu errichten die damalige Quintana de Vimaranes, um die sich die Stadt Guimarães entwickelte.
Um das Kloster und seine Bewohner vor den normannischen Invasionen zu schützen, ließ er später eine Burg errichten (Castell de Guimarès).
