Het standbeeld ter ere van de stichter van de stad Guimarães staat op het gelijknamige plein en is ontworpen door Álvaro Brée. Het werd geschonken door António de Oliveira Salazar en in 1960 ingehuldigd door de toenmalige president van de Republiek, admiraal Américo Tomaz.
Mumadona Dias was de stichter van de oude stad Guimarães, want in de tweede helft van de 10e eeuw, na de dood van haar man graaf Hermenegildo en in overeenstemming met zijn wensen die in zijn testament waren vastgelegd, liet deze rijke gravin een klooster bouwen in wat toen Quintana de Vimaranes was, waarrond de stad Guimarães zich ontwikkelde.
Om het klooster en zijn inwoners te beschermen tegen Normandische invallen, liet ze later een kasteel bouwen (Kasteel Guimarães).
