La statua in onore del fondatore della città di Guimarães si trova nella piazza omonima ed è stata progettata da Álvaro Brée . Fu donata da António de Oliveira Salazar e inaugurata nel 1960 dall'allora Presidente della Repubblica, l'ammiraglio Américo Tomaz.
Mumadona Dias fu la fondatrice dell'antica città di Guimarães , poiché nella seconda metà del X secolo , dopo la morte del marito, il conte Hermenegildo e in conformità con le sue volontà registrate nel suo testamento, questa ricca contessa fece costruire un monastero in quella che allora era Quintana de Vimaranes, attorno al quale si sviluppò la città di Guimarães.
Per proteggere il monastero e i suoi abitanti dalle invasioni normanne, in seguito fece costruire un castello (Castello di Guimares).
