I det mellem-nederlandske ordbog kan du læse, at navnet Verloren Kost betegner et strategisk objekt: et forsvarsanlæg, sædvanligvis et tårn; adskilt fra hovedlinjen, som befandt sig foran dette på en vis afstand. Betydningen af det er en fremrykket forstærkning. En Verloren Kost er et midlertidigt forsvar, hvorfra man trækker sig tilbage til den egentlige forstærkning. Det er bogstaveligt talt en tabt investering, der ifølge nogle kilder bestod af et tårn, og nogle gange stod dette på bymuren.
